Vineyard Notes

The 161-acre Dierberg vineyard is now 8 years old and sits on undulating hills about 4 miles east of Highway 101 in the middle of the Santa Maria Valley. The vines are planted to catch the prevailing winds from the Pacific Ocean, which is a scant 14 miles west of the vineyard. This is Flying Goat’s second vintage from Block 3 of this ultra-premium vineyard

Winemaker Notes

As in the first 2001 vintage, two different Pinot Noir clones were chosen – Dijon clone 115 for backbone and body, and Clone 31 for its elegant floral notes. Kept separate, both lots were de-stemmed and placed in small open-top fermenters for a day before being inoculated with yeast to begin fermentation. While fermenting to dryness, the cap of grapes was punched down into the liquid two or three times each day. The must was then pressed and the free run wine was gravity-fed into French oak barrels where it aged on lees for 11 months, with occasional stirring to add creaminess to the final texture. In late summer the two wines were assembled into a blend. The wine was lightly filtered, and bottled in September 2003.
